Chapter Ten
There was light and time enough after they returned to the city for Eve to update Horowitz. His perspective was different from Eve’s, his contacts and context varied, and at this point, he deserved to know the nuances of any case he’d had a part in. Even if Eve couldn’t be visible within the police department, Horowitz was, and he represented the best of what the force could be.
The moment she turned the corner of the rear hallway and saw his open office door, his head bent over his desk, his features half-lit by the lamp, she felt the little flutter that had become so consistent and so telling whenever she laid eyes on him. It was so pure a feeling that she was helpless to stop it; the dance of butterflies becoming addictive.
Pausing outside in the hall, she considered the fact that every time they’d been together of late, there had been a physical gesture that made her heart skip innumerable beats. What would it be next? She cautioned herself to keep a level head and to pace any action or sentiment.
His desk was littered with papers he was trying to sort into an organized stack as she knocked on the frame of his office door.
“Why do you keep the door open with such racket out here?” Eve asked, stepping in as he gestured her forward, grimacing at a howl down the hall. She took a seat opposite him.
“I make these men nervous, in every tired stereotype, so I’ll not play into their paranoia of secreting things away. I keep myself and my door open because I have nothing to hide.”
“Such nonsense shouldn’t be borne.” Another raucous yell from another corridor. She made a face. “It sounds like a zoo.”
“Well, it is.” He proffered a note and a newspaper. Eve reached out to take them. “After examining the empty apartment where Dr. Font was found dead and drowned in poison, I wrote Scotland Yard about it—he was a British citizen after all—and I finally managed to get a response.”
Noting the seal, Eve read the brief note from a sergeant saying their force would look into the signing-off on the Prenze death, which had been verified in London, and any correlation to names of interest.
“Good work,” Eve said eagerly. “If this stalls and you need an additional push, Gran knows someone there. At the very top.”
Horowitz smiled. “Of course she does. How’s the spectral front?”
Eve relayed Mahoney’s odd turnabout and the results of the Irvington trip. Her frustration at not knowing the location of Dupont’s “chapel of treasures” was evident, she couldn’t keep it from her tone.
“This fresh connection of Montmartre, Dupont, and Prenze at a meeting before his ‘death,’ with Prenze as a sponsor, is noteworthy,” Horowitz declared. “I’ll add that to my next Scotland Yard query. And in terms of the larger pattern, I haven’t been able to stop thinking about the Mulciber act and how it may relate to the sadistic side of this collection. I need to know how he fits in and what about that act got under our skin.
